It is hypothesized that the Esterson family took the family name "Esterson" (son of Esther) from her name in the first half of the 19th century, and that her grand daughter Esther Esterson (Margosin) was named after her after her death.

Esther, her husband Joseph Margosin and their only child Rebecca ("Cousin Beckie") were apparently the first of the Esterson family to immigrate to Baltimore from Berdichev, Ukraine in September 1888.

According to the 1910 Census, she was just two years younger than her husband and married at age 25. The 1930 Census states she was 20 yrs old when she got married (more accurate). Also according to the 1930 Census, she immigrated in 1885.

According to a family story, was sent to open the door to the home during the family Pesach seder, in order to allow the prophet Elijah to

enter. When called upon to return to the seder table, he did not respond, and when someone went to the door to investigate, he was found to have disappeared. He was never heard from again. It is thought that he was about 3-4 years old at the time (1899-1900), which would have meant that this took place in Baltimore. It is not known if this story is true or correct.

Notes for Simon Esterson:

He attended 1878-?? cheder in ? Berdychiv, Ukraine. After he arrived at Ellis Island, he went directly to Baltimore to live with his older brother Joseph. He operated his pants shop on the first floor of their three story row house (as subcontractor to a clothing manufacturer). His workers were people brought over from Europe, taught the work for a living (housing, food, & clothing) until ready to go out on their own. His shop on Hanover Street was a slightly larger shop.

He and his family lived through the Baltimore Fire of 1904. Raged over a large part of the city, within blocks of where they lived. People were moved through the night by horse-drawn vehicles, by the Davidson Transfer Company.

In their store they sold "tripes" pork, pork sausage and fatback, not packaged, but off loins and in the links delivered by the wholesalers. Their customers were Poles, Italians, Irish, Jews and Blacks. They spoke Polish, Italian and English in addition to German, Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian.

He was employed 19??-15 (?) as ? at the Louis Marcus Women's Cloak Co., Baltimore, where he met his future wife Anna Marcus.

About 1915 Louis Marcus loaned him the money to set up his own women's cloak business, working with the Louis Marcus Corporation. During this period, he brought relatives of his wife to the United States from Lithuania and then helped them get started by employing them in his business (David Saxon, Morris Marcus, Gilbert Marcus).

In 1929 his business went bankrupt in the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash, and he lost all of his money, including $20,000

saved in banks for each of his small children (he went to Atlantic City for two weeks to recover from the shock from this loss). He then set up the Continental Lacquer Company with a partner ? Rubin in 1930; Rubin left the business to start his own similar company when the two became involved in a policy dispute. He employed his sons Sidney and Macy Esterson as salesmen (and his son Gerald as salesman -- when Sidney was sick with Psoriasis -- or in manufacturing during summers between school semesters) until 1975 when the business was liquidated and he retired. His hobbies were shul volunteer work and cards; he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the

Shaarei Zion Congregation, and President of the Shul for seven years.

Sidney I. Esterson, who headed Hebrew schools in Baltimore, died Wednesday of heart failure at his home in Hallandale, Fla. He was 93.

Dr. Esterson was educational director of the Beth Jacob Hebrew school and center from 1948 until his retirement in 1970. From 1925 until 1946, he was principal of the independent Isaac Davidson Hebrew School.

For many years, he also taught and was director of the Department of Information and Research at what is now the Baltimore Hebrew University. He also had studied at the school and had been a member of the first class to receive teachers' diplomas, in 1923, and of the first class, in 1924, to receive bachelor of Hebrew letters degrees.

The Baltimore native was a graduate of City College and, in 1924, of the Johns Hopkins University, where he was also awarded a doctorate in Semitics in 1931.

Services were to be held at 1 p.m. today at Sol Levinson & Bros. Inc., 6010 Reisterstown Road. His wife, the former Rose Abramowitz, died in 1993. He is survived by three daughters, Lonna E.

Kahn of Prairie Village, Kan., Judith E. Chernak of Pikesville and Marilyn E. Stern of Tampa, Fla.; a son, Dr. Joseph B. Esterson of Hollywood, Fla.; a sister, Bessie Esterson of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

They lived in a brick three story row house with white steps, so famous from the daily scrubbing, on a narrow cobble stone street called York Street, between Charles and Light Street, not far from Federal Hill and Fort McHenry where the National Anthem by Francis Scott Key was born.

His father had a pants shop on the first floor in thje front part of the house, usually used as the parlor with operators sewing pants on the old treadle type manually operated Singer sewing machines. The workers were people brought over from "the old country" and taught the work for a living (housed, fed and clothed) until they were able to be on their own.

His mother worked the machine punching out the button-holes. He and his older brother Jack took the pants to the "finishers" for completion, loaded with the top of the pants over their heads and resting on their backs and the legs over their shoulders down their right and left fronts. They would deliver a load and pick up the completed pants to bring back the finished product, which would be inspected and made ready for delivery to the clothing manufacturer for whom their shop worked as a contractor.

The Baltimore fire in 1904 is one of the first experieces he recalled vividly with the fire raging over a large part of the center of the city, within blocks of where they lived. The Davidson Transfer Company and owner Mr. Davidson operated all through the night moving people by horse-drawn vehicle. They fire came close to their house, but luckily they did not have to move.

In 1906 was the San Francisco earthquake and fire. By this time they had outgrown the pants shop and moved to Hanover Street, the next street west of Charles, but in the same vicinity. There his father had room for a little larger shop. He and his siblings went to public school at hanover and Hill for the early grades. There was a shul there also.

Baltimore homecoming week in 1910, there was a parade down baltimore Street to which he went with his mother. Papa said that he'll never forget this parade because he learned a good lesson about what tobacco can do to you, especially when you are 12 years old. One of the floats was for a tobacco company, introducing their chewing tobacco called "kite", and they were throwing out samples in small pouches. As the float passed them, he caught one of the pouches. He said "while I was one year shy of Bar Mitzvah, I, never-the-less became a man when we returned home and I reached in my pocket, pulled out the plug of tobacco, bit off a chunk -- and swallowed it. I rolled all over the dining room floor for hours. Have had no use for tobacco since."

During the summer after his graduation from public school, he worked 2 summer jobs, delivery boy and stock boy (Read's Drug Store). That September he entered Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Wagner Feldman and sold newspapers after school. In 1912 he was a delivery messenger for Western Union and page boy to Ollie James, William Jennings Bryan and Woodrow Wilson. He also worked at the Baltimore Democratic Convention at night.

During 1916-1918 he worked a s a draftsman at Fort Pitt Bridge and Iron Works, was a tracer at H. Koppers Company, By-Product Coke Ovens, Designers & Engineers Assistant at George Demarest & Company, and a timekeeper at McClintock & Marshall Company.

At Lehigh University, he was on the class track team, varsity track team, varsity cross country, mechanical engineering society, art staff of Burr (monthly school magazine) and Phi Epsilon Pi. He was also an amateur boxer. After getting his masters degree, he turned down a teaching position at Loyola university.

He built a house on Bancroft Road in 1932. He passed up an army commisssion in 1945. In 1950 he was one of the founders of the San Diego Jewish Community Center. He sold HEP Locker in 1959. He also bought his son Howard in dry cleaning and shoe repair business. He built their house in University City in 1967 and sold Morgan.
