Notes for Rachel Steuer:

Since she and her husband were listed as immigrating in 1888, it's very possible they came together (his naturalization card shows the date of 13 Nov 1887). She was also naturalized, through his papers. According to the 1910 Census, she had six children, but only four were still living at the time of the census - Bessie, Nathan, Henry & Sadie.

Death date is not proven to be hers - still checking. She is listed in all of the census reports, including 1930 (Rose). She sailed back from Buenos Aires, Argentina on the Southern Prince, 14 Mar 1936, with her son Nathan and arrived in New York on 2 Apr 1936. It stated she was born 12 Jan 1857 in New York (not Austria).

William's father died when he was age 2. His name on the marriage records was Wolf Schtier. According to the 1910 census (Steyer), he emigrated in 1888. According to the 1930 census, he was 25 when he first married, he would have been born in 1896. Habsburg Krakow: 1795-1809 & 1846-1918.

Notes for Ida Leber:

The Hebrew date of her death was 10th of Tammuz (Taf-Resh-Pey-Aleh). According to the 1910 census, she emigrated in 1887. According to the 1920 Census, her year of birth was ca1874 and her age was 46. Both she and her brother Sam could not have both been born in 1872, especially just 4 months apart. She also couldn't have been born in 1873 or 1874 since her sister Celia was born in July 1874. I assume she was born in 1873 since I was told by Bert Kalfus that she was between Samuel and Celia, According to the 1900 census (Steyer), she was born in April 1872 and emigrated in 1885. Her tombstone has her date of birth as 21 May 1872.

1900 Census lists his date of birth as Mar 1890. He did a lot of overseas traveling. Woodmere is on Long Island.

He sailed back from Buenos Aires, Argentina on the Southern Prince, 14 Mar 1936, with his mother, Rose, and arrived in New York on 2 Apr 1936. It stated he was born 15 Apr 1891. He was listed as Nathan Samuel Schiff. The passenger list from Naples, Italy, Dec 1937, stated he was born 13 Apr 1891.

According to the 1940 census, he was listed as single and head of household.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 11:30am at 112 Lafayette Place, Woodmere. Shiva was also at 112 Lafayette Place, Woodmere until August 4th (1959).

Her parents were from Russia according to the 1930 census. On the Dade County 1935 Census she was listed as wife, but only she and her two children were listed on the census. It shows that she had a college degree and work was listed: wife.

Yorkville is a neighborhood in the greater Upper East Side, in the borough of Manhattan in New York City.

Max enjoyed fishing and deep sea fishing. Max was admitted to the bar in 1916. He enlisted in the army on 9 Oct 1917 in New York City, Grade Private, #1909821, WWI. Laul (sp?) Sector 28 June 1918 to 6 Aug 1918; Marbache Sector 15 Aug 1918 to 11 Sept 1918 (France); St. Wihiel Offensive 12 Sept 1918 to 18 Sept 1918; Meuse Argousel Offensive 7 Oct 1918 to 31 Oct 1918. He received an honorable discharge from Signal Corps 328 Infantry, 82nd Division on 3 Jun 1919 for reason of a letter from the Adj. Gen. of the Army, dated 19 Nov 1918 (220.81 Camp Upton, NY Misc Div). Approved for Victory Medal with St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne Defense Sector. He was in good physical condition and had received no wounds while in service.

He was a wonderful and loving father and devoted husband. He taught his wife to cook. He practiced law in New York City from 1918 (when he returned from WWI) until he was forced to retire in 1936, after a nearly fatal heart attack. He worked with his father's 1st cousin, Max David Steuer in his law office, 17 John Street, for awhile. He sent his brother Harold to Law School. Later he opened his own law office. Harold came to work with him. After his first heart attack, he sold their home in Cedarhurst, Long Island and moved his family to Miami, Florida, due to his health problems. He returned to New York frequently, because he still had a law office there. His brother ran his law office for him. He died at his residence, 27th of Tevet, in Miami, FL of heart disease, at the age of 48.

He was buried in the Temple section of Graceland Memorial Park, Tamiami Trial (the street) and there is only a plaque, no tombstone.

Notes for Rosie Kushner:

She gave herself the name Ruth Wilma. She said she didn't like the name Rosie because it reminded her of Rosie the cow. Rosie went to school in Ferndale and later Liberty High School. The family moved back to New York City and she went to business school and had several interesting jobs. Her last job was being a legal secretary.

The lawyers she worked for often took her to court to record for them (not as a court stenographer). It was in a court room that she and Max Steuer were introduced. They had a short courtship and eloped. On Christmas Eve, 1923, they had a family wedding.

He was a silk salesman before he was an attorney. His brother Max sent him to Law School. He worked in his brother Max's law office. He practiced law in the Woolworth Building and later at 17 John Street, both in New York City. After his brother Max had his heart attack in 1933, he ran the law office for him.

According to the 1930 census, he was born in the later portion of 1894 or beginning of 1895 (he was 35yrs old).

At Sde Eliyahu I worked half-day in the pomegranate and grape fields and learned Hebrew half-day. Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu is located in the Beit Shean Valley, ¼ mile from the Jordan border.

Near the end of my stay at the kibbutz, I decided to extend my time in Israel to a year. I was offered a job in Tsfat, so I took it. Three weeks before the date of my plane ticket, I decided to go back to California for three weeks to back up everything and make aliyah.

It's believed that he came to the USA with two

Max D. had an exceptional memory and played golf.

 He was 26 years old when he married. He began 

private practice of law in 1893. He never referred 

to notes, but used the exact quotations he needed 

in citing testimony. His knowledge of the law was 

vast and success attended his efforts as counsel in 

many cases of nationwide interest. Max D. was the 

Chief Defense Lawyer and won the acquittal for the owners of the Triangle Shirt-Waist Factory fire in 1911. He represented Frances Hodgson Burnett and William Randolph Hearst in libel cases. He was a trustee of Beth Israel Hospital and later of the Federation for Support of Jewish Philanthropic Societies. Life Magazine wrote an article on his unusual art collection in its 29 Oct 1941 issue, and later wrote a correction to the article.

He is a member of the Progress, Democratic and Tamorora clubs and is connected with the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Society, the United Hebrew Charities, the Hebrew Orphan Asylum, Educational Alliance, Philanthropic Hospital, Home for Aged and Infirm Hebrews, Young Men’s Hebrew Association, Mount Sinai Hospital, Montefiore Home, Girls’Technical School, Snshine Society for Blind Children and other charitable institutions.

Max died while on vacation at Wentworth Hall Hotel in Jackson, New Hampshire. He had a heart attack on the golf course. His granddaughter Jackie said "This was the first time I had seen my mother cry. "

His studies at Harvard were interrupted by Army service. Aron was secretary of Harvard Class of 1920. He was an contributor and editor on the Law Reviews in 1923. He was director of YMHA of New York, 1924-1939. Also, he was the author of "Max D. Steuer: Trial Lawyer, 1949". He wrote the "Aesop in the Courts" column, a weekly series of legal fables in the New York Law Journal from 1964 to 1979. The articles were always like fables, starting with "Once upon a time" and he signed them with just the letter "S". Judge Steuer was considered a conservative in criminal cases. He was known for his incisive legal thinking and concise style. Columbia County Association, 1950 and New York Association since 1953. Upon his retirement, the 5 justices fo the Appellate Division voted unanimously to create an unsalaried post of Judicial Administration Officer for him. Justice Aron Steuer only left the post, in which he oversaw projects for the courts, the year he died. He died at the age of 87.

She was in a number of Broadway productions. They were married at the Roman Catholic Church of St Joan the Arc in Jackson Heights. She devoted much of her life to work in Roman Catholic charities. She was for many years a member of the Board of helpers of the Holy Souls, and Executive Vice President of Lots For Little, a thrift shop operated by many Catholic charitable organizations. She was also an active member of the Third Order of St. Francis, and of the Association of Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. She was 76 years old at time of death.

Notes for Max David Steuer:

Max was raised Catholic and was pretty devout up to 18 yrs or so. He's been atheist ever since. Culturally, he regards himself as being Jewish. He went to London originally to a Ph.D. at the London School of Economics. His learning was interrupted for two years by being drafted into the US Army. We he returned to LSE, he divorced his wife and was offered a job there.

Originally, he had no intention of staying in acedemic life, or in London for that matter. He thought of himself as being an economist in Washington. He's had a good life teaching at the London School of Economics and living in London.

Max met his second wife in Ghana, where he was Chairman of the Economics Dept., she was doing research on an African Language. They have no children, but have been together since 1974. Among his many interests, he is a hot air balloonist with a World Record for Altitude, Distance and Duration in 1984. He is also a keen mucisian and plays bass guitar with the Irving Street Band and the Irving Street Sextet. He also wrote and produced the script for the feature film "The Committee".

He is currently (2002) Reader Emeritus in the Economics Dept., London Scool of Economics, Co-Director, Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Sciences, London School of Economics; Program Associate, Cities Programe, Logic and Scientific Method, London School of Economics. He said that he has just finished his best book.

He died while a junior or senior in prep-school. His obituary said that reposing was at "The Abbey", 132 East 70th Street. Requiem Mass Church of St. Jean Baptiste, 75th Street and Lexington Ave., Monday, May 15 at 11:00am.

The Stars and Stripes newspaper said he was found hanging from a tree in a pasture a half mile from his Deerfield Academy (Massachusettes) dormitory. The boy was hanging by his own necktie. It was declared a suicide by the medical examiner.

Most of their children and their offspring either belonged to a reform Temple or nothing at all. All of the children, and grandchildren had absolutely no religious upbringing.

His early education was acquired in common schools and a gymnasium in Hungary. He was a

physician and he trained and lived in Vienna, Austria as a young man. He was recognized as one of Cleveland's specialists in the profession of medicine. He was a staunch Republican; Chairman of the Cleveland City Council; elector of William McKinley. Some of Cleveland's most distinctive steps in modern progress were initiated by him. He had a great sense of humor, was an avid reader, and made a great adjustment to life in America. DB received a telegram from President Eisenhower on his 90th birthday.

In 1900 he resigned his business and professional connections to go abroad. He pursued the rigid routine of post-graduate work for 3½ years in great medical centers - Vienna, Budapest, Berlin and London. When he returned to Cleveland, he resumed practice as a specialist in internal medicine, and his best work has been accomplished in that field. He was on staff at Mount Sinai Hospital for 14 years.

He was instrumental in securing pasteurized milk supply for the city and was the father of garbage collection and disposal system of Cleveland. He was the author of the bill in the council for creating a dumping station on the lake fromt for the purpose of reclaiming a large tract of land

there. He was instrumental in securing the opening of Bank Street, and the first to call serious

attention to the Lake Front Group Plan for public buildings. His name is closely associated with the attachment of the City Children's Hospital, and he turned the first spade of dirt in its construction.

He had nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren at the time of his death. Funeral services were held Sunday, February 1st at 2:00PM. Contributions may be made to the Dr. Herbert Steuer Memorial Fund of The Western Reserve Medical School. The family was sitting at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Sternheimer, 5315 Kenmore Road.

He was a brilliant lawyer. His office was in the American Trust Building. He also was a horrible drunk. When he was drunk, he was an awful, terrible, horrible poker player. He was addicted to gambling. His "friends" knew this and plied him with booze before his poker games. Needless to say, he lost the family "Jewels" literally! He lost much of the money that he and his wife inherited from her father. He committed suicide absolutely broke, except for some stock he left to his wife, Rebecca. This kept his daughter, Gazella, from going to college, which perhaps made her the bitter person she became.

He wasn't a bad person-only when he was drunk, and then, only on poker nights. According to his grandson, Ed Reid, "There had to be something Good about Edward, since three of the four grandsons were all named Edward." There was himself, Edward Rosenberg (Reid), R. Edward Kaplan and Edward "Buddy" Steuer.

He was in the first Law Class Graduation of Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

For a few years we saw a lot of Harry Steuer's family. They had more than one Seder together. They lived in the same neighborhood, but Harry's family moved frequently depending upon whether Harry was in the money or out of it! Herb Ives said that he was a SUPER DENTIST AND ONE OF THE BEST IN CLEVELAND.

He was a grandfather of two and great-grandfather of one. His memorial service were held at the Mayfield Cemetery Mausoleum on Sunday, March 3rd at 12:30PM.

The doctors told them the likelihood of them having another severely retard child probably would not happen again, but it did. Harriet, with the help of her sister Mildred, ran the Laura Lee Candies for another couple of years after her husband passed away. They then sold business. After Joe passed away, she moved in with her sister Mildred Steuer Issacson. For the next 35 years, the two "girls" lived together in several different locations in Miami Beach. Herb Ives remembers that she died in 1984.

Billy had a long and checkered career. He got into the naval academy, was expelled for cheating, then, somehow went to West Point. He was sentenced after WWII, he served in the services briefly. He served in both the Army and the Navy and was a real con artist. He also was a land scam artist, believed to have been in the southwest (might have been Arizona). He served time in Sing Sing. He killed himself rather than go to prison, and then Marty Rose (his cousin to whom he was very close) took the bulk of the rap. He followed in his father's footsteps.

She was a very good student and salutarian of her high school class. Her father loosing all the family's money affected her deeply. Perhaps this is what made her the bitter person that she became. Her father died before she got married.

Her MS didn't manifest itself until about 1926, Ed was about 6 yrs old and Howard was about one year old. It must have been dormant for many years. Her maternal uncle, Isadore Gelb, also had it. MS hasn't manifested itself in later generations to date (2002).

A funny story that shows her irreverence (told by Ed):

When I was a little boy we lived in a gentile neighborhood. One day an old Jewish man (a schnorrer, I think) was going from door to door. He stopped to ask me if there were any Yehudim" in the area. What the hess was Yehudim? I said I'd ask my mother. He asked if I was Jewish, and I said yes. He asked what my Jewish name was. I said I'd ask my mother. So I did. She said Patrick. "You're no Jewish boy". You'd have had to know Gazella.

Beatrice was about 4 years old and she was sent in with a glass of milk to give to her Aunt Nellie. Then the Armistice was announced, and as her cousin Edward Grohs later told her, "All Hell broke loose" and he and uncle Henry had a hard time getting through the traffic, to get her to the hospital to have Ruth. She is the Temple historian and wrote the history of Tiferith Israel, published in 2000. Ruth attended college for 3 years.

When the trust papers were returned to Harriet after Mortys death, Herbert and Arthur had been removed from the list of beneficiaries and Morty's children Marry and Tommy were substituted. A large battle ensued and finally was settled with Mortys estate paying a sum to Harriet.

Arthur Henry (Jr) was a writer who had five children, no two of whom had the same mother. He wrote a several novels of fiction and was an editor of a popular news magazine at one time. He worked as a ghost writer for Dick Gregory, the African-American comedian in the late 50's and early 60's. He's the author of "Camp". His wife is a daughter of one of the Vice-Presidents of Johns-Manville Crop. They were on their honeymoon ca 1951, while his mother took care of the child.

He was diagnosed with arthritis of the spine while still a teenager, and was crippled by the time he was 40. He attended Gordon Military Academy and, for a short while, West Point. After graduating from Duke University, STEUER studied briefly at Columbia University and pursued a writing career.

He wrote two published novels (Terrible Swift Sword, later produced as a play, and The Rebel Gun), and briefly acted on Broadway. He also wrote television plays, movie scripts and magazine articles. A feature series for Esquire on comedians included pieces on Lenny Bruce, Jonathan Winters and Dick Gregory. College friends have confirmed that he and his college sweetheart at Duke University had a son [1], after she'd married someone else.

After his divorce to Brenda in 1966, Arthur continued living in SoHo with his son ARTHUR JR. In May 1969 ARTHUR H. STEUER SR sold the SoHo house and auctioned off its contents. He took what remained of his STEUER inheritance, leaving his 16-year old son in NY City on his own, and took off to tour Europe and India with a 19-year old woman.

To treat the pain from the disease with medication, he moved to Tibet, and later India, joining a monastery, learning to meditate and to overcome the crippling disease. He abandoned his family. spent thirty years living alone in Asia (mostly India and Sri Lanka).Tended by servants he died in Kandy, Sri Lanka in 2002, convinced that he had been victimized by everyone he'd ever known. What money was left from the STEUER ESTATE he left to the Buddhist Book Trust, the Goodwill of Kandy, and his servants. He has really not ever earned a living and lived off the proceeds of his mother's, father's and aunt's estates.
